Zahid: Our submarine can’t dive

(AFP) - Malaysia’s first submarine, a European-made Scorpene delivered last September, has developed problems that make it unfit for diving, Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

The KD Tunku Abdul Rahman sailed into a grand reception last year as the first of two commissioned from French contractor DCNS and Spain’s Navantia for a total of 3.4 billion ringgit.

Named after the country’s first prime minister, it was hailed as an important acquisition despite opposition allegations of corruption in the deal.

"The submarine can still dive but when we detected the defects, we were advised that it should not dive," Zahid told reporters.

"The (parts found with) defects are still under warranty so the supplier and contractor are repairing them," he added.

Navy chief Abdul Aziz Jaafar said a problem first emerged in the submarine’s cooling system last December. After being fixed, another defect was identified in a different system last month.

"We hope it can dive again after February 18, so we can carry out the tropical water trials," Abdul Aziz told reporters.

The navy chief said the second submarine, the KD Tun Razak which is named after the nation’s second premier, is expected to arrive from France on May 31. It was originally scheduled for delivery in late 2009.

The two submarines have attracted controversy since the deal was signed in 2002.

Malaysia’s opposition claims that a 540-million-ringgit commission was paid to a close associate of Prime Minister Najib Razak in brokering the contract.

Najib has denied there was any corruption in the deal, which was made when he was defence minister.

Malay NGOs hold protest, burn effigy of Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: A group of Malay non-governmental organisations staged a protest at Komtar here after Friday prayers to object against what they claimed was discrimination in the demolition of illegal hawker stalls, burning an effigy of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in the process.

The crowd had earlier congregated at Masjid Jamek Simpang Enam before Friday prayers and walked to Komtar in Jalan Magazine, which houses the state government offices, to hand over a memorandum to Lim.

Police failed in trying to block the crowd from staging the walk.

The protest was organised by the Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce and National Malay Students Federation (GPMS).

Also joining the protest was the head of Perkasa, Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali, who is also Pasir Mas MP.

When representatives from the group failed to meet Lim at his office in Komtar, the crowd set an effigy representing Lim on fire. They also burnt the memorandum.

Police, including Federal Reserve Unit, were also at the scene to carry out crowd control.

Cyclist hits out after being dumped from road race

AFTER giving up a full-time job to train on his own, road cyclist Loh Sea Keong arrived in Vientiane eyeing a shot at SEA Games glory. But he has ended up as a tourist instead.

Sea Keong was only informed on Saturday evening that he would not start in the men’s road race scheduled for today.
Road cyclist Loh Sea Keong

“They flicked me at the last minute. They had a meeting just one day before the start of competitions today and then informed me that I will not be on the start list for the road race,” he said yesterday.

“They took Mohd Razif Salleh, who was supposed to do the road time trial, to replace me.”

And the cruel decision not to inform him earlier has left much bitterness in him.

“They had already planned not to include me and could have told me about it so that I don’t have to waste my time and effort to come all the way here,”said Sea Keong, who had trained on his own in Kelantan.

“I heard some rumours that I will not get to compete in the road race. And I was in two minds about coming to Laos. But I won a selection race in October in which they said that the top two riders would get in automatically.

“I had already quit my job back home to train full-time on my own expenses without any salary or support from anyone. And I did not want to waste the effort that I have put in by not coming here.”

Sea Keong, who was dropped from the national team programme six months ago, added that he could not understand the rationale for dropping him from the race.

“They said that I did not have good results for the past six months but what about the rider who replaced me. Did he have any good results for the past six months? I’m even curious whether he has any good results for the last five years.

“And then, why did they bother to have the selection race in the first place.”

Sea Keong said that he would be most surprised if Malaysia did well in the event.

“The coaches and managers don’t even care about showing us the race course for time trial or road race. They just bring the cyclists to ride on one of the highways in Vientiane. This is really bad planning,” he said in annoyance.

Malaysia finished out of the medals in the individual road time trial yesterday.

Ng Yong Li, the only Malaysian in the fray after Razif was moved to the road race, finished sixth in the men’s 40km race.

In the women’s 30km race, Mariana Mohamad and Nor Azian Alias were placed seventh and ninth respectively.

A vote for Pakatan is a vote against corruption

by Thomas Lee

The Bagan Pinang by-election on Oct 11 is an opportunity for the voters to tell the Braisan Nasional in no uncertain term that the practice of corruption and cronyism must be wiped out in the country. They must go all out to ensure the defeat of the Umno candidate.

By fielding a candidate suspended by his own party for corrupt practice, the Barisan Nasional is obviously snubbing the people, indicating that it couldn’t care less about what they think and feel. It is a de facto endorsement of corrupt practices.

By nominating such a tainted candidate for the Bagan Pinang by-election, the purported high moral ground on which the Umno leaders have been self-righteously proclaiming has been exposed as a mere hollow sinking ground.

Umno is arrogantly confident and cocksure that it will win the Bagan Pinang battle even with a corruption-contaminated candidate.

The voters of Bagan Pinang must come out in full force to show Umno through the ballot box that the days of its exaggerated sense of superiority are numbered.

It is time the Barisan Nasional be told that:

– it cannot simply grab power by unethical and illegal means, like what had happened in Perak;

– it cannot simply use oppressive laws like the ISA to silence its critics, opposition leaders and the freedom and human right crusaders;

– it cannot simply use harsh enforcement on peaceful unarmed demonstrators and candlelight protestors;

– it cannot simply change the education system at its whims and fancy every other few years, causing confusion among the teachers, parents and students, and creating chaos in the schooling system;

– it cannot simply continue to control and manipulate the press and mass media to promote its own causes, and to run down the opposition and critics;

– it cannot simply allow the corrupt political leaders to go unpunished, especially those using public funds for private holidays to Disneyland and those living beyond their means in great luxury in multi-million ringgit mansions;

– it cannot simply allow investigation into the mysterious death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock to be frustrated by attempts to prevent relevant persons from testifying;

– it cannot simply cover up scandals involving public projects such the PKFZ issue.

Will the voters of Bagan Pinang take the lead and send the message to Umno and the Barisan Nasional that “Enough is Enough” and it’s “Time for Change”?
